You Can't Go To Europe Either? Damn.

(via) I can't afford to take a vacation any farther away from here than Salem. I'm certainly not going to Europe in the forseeable future.

So I'm totally feeling the Bush Admin Republicans who won't be going to Europe anytime soon. Seriously. Of course, I can't go because there's no money, honey. They can't go because it just wouldn't be a good idea, in the staying-out-of-international-jail way.

Just so you guise know, if you need ideas about how to take time off in America, I can help you there. Staycation? We just call that life around here.

And, no, it's not because I'm bitter that all the fomerly-prosperous people I see are breaking their arms patting themselves on the back in self-congratulation on discovering the joys of the "Staycation" when that's pretty much all the vacation I've ever known.

Okay, I lied just there. It is, in fact, because I am amazingly bitter about it. [Sam Kinison Primal Scream] Welcome to MY WORLD!!!! [/Sam Kinison Primal Scream]

  1. Hello The Chinuk,

I hear your plantive cry in the wilderness about the Staycation. My children are all hurting about this economy and it has interfered with their summer plans, too. We just opened an email from a friend in Massachusetts and he was let go on Friday. A neighbor of ours with two children was let go several weeks ago. Luckily, his wife is still working. Obviously, this economic crash has hurt virtually everyone, even the super-rich.

We are two of the "yuppy elderly" ages 69 and 74. We retired here in Beaverton, and luckily we aren't in terrible jeopardy at this point. We just returned from a pre-planned Mexican vacation. We are timeshare owners from 2002 in the Hilton Grand Vacations Club. It is beautiful in Nuevo Vallarta, but they are struggling too. Although the Mexican states of Jalisco and Nayarit are safe to visit, going anywhere via plane, train or automobile takes a chunk of money. Even so, the airlines are changing routes and charging for extra luggage. We were lucky to get to four destinations in Europe in 2006.

If you'd like to see some nice photos of a warm climate, please visit my blog. Each of us worked more than fifty years, and had to bail early from our careers in 2002 because of the downturn in the local economy.

    Cordially,

    Ellen Kimball

PS. I have you linked on my blog in the right column.
